Fuse Box replacement in Edinburgh & the Lothians
Whether you call it a fuse box, fuse board or consumer unit, we'll upgrade it to a modern, fully protected unit. Properly tested before and after, fixed-price and fully certified.
What do we mean by fuse box?
Fuse box, fuse board and consumer unit are all names for the same thing: the unit, usually near your electricity meter, that sends power to every circuit in your property and cuts it off when something goes wrong. "Fuse box" and "fuse board" are the traditional names, from when these units used fuse wire. "Consumer unit" is the modern term, and today's units use circuit breakers and RCDs instead, which are safer, faster to react and simply reset when they trip.
Upgrading an old fuse box is one of the most effective safety improvements you can make to a property. We replace fuse boxes and consumer units in homes, rental properties and commercial premises across Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian.
When should you replace your fuse box?
You still have rewireable fuses or an old-style fuse board
Your board has no RCD protection, or only covers some circuits
You have a plastic consumer unit in a domestic property
An EICR has flagged your board as needing replacement
Circuits trip regularly, or you've noticed buzzing, scorch marks or a burning smell
You're adding an EV charger, heat pump, new kitchen or extension
Your insurer, mortgage lender or a buyer's survey has asked for it
For landlords, RCD protection isn't optional. To meet the Repairing Standard in Scotland, your main consumer unit must have at least one 30mA RCD.
What you'll get
A modern, non-combustible metal consumer unit [from brands like Hager or Schneider]
Individual RCBO protection on each circuit, so a fault on one circuit doesn't take out the whole property
Surge protection to guard your appliances and electronics
Arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) where required, including in HMOs
A clear, labelled circuit chart so you always know what's what
How it works
Send us a few photos. By WhatsApp or text, send photos of your fuse box (cover open and closed), your electricity meter and the cables around it, and where the earth cable clamps onto your gas and water pipes. We'll come back with an indicative price range.
Inspection. For most properties we start with an EICR, so we know exactly what we're working with before we give you a fixed price. Part of the inspection cost is credited against your fuse box replacement if you go ahead.
Your fixed-price quote. Clearly broken down, with nothing hidden.
Preparation. We order your new consumer unit and confirm how long the power will be off, planning around home working, medical equipment or tenants. If there's no isolator switch between your meter and fuse box, we'll arrange for SP Energy Networks to fit one.
Installation day. We photograph and label everything before disconnecting, install your new board, then bring circuits back on one at a time with full testing throughout.
Certification. You'll receive a full Electrical Installation Certificate, and we'll log your next inspection date so we can remind you when it's due.
